Are you constantly overwhelmed by the mess your kids are making in their play spaces? Do you find yourself thinking that there has to be a better way? Organizing your kids’ spaces doesn’t have to be stressful—honestly, it can even be enjoyable. With a few simple strategies and the right storage tools, you can turn these spaces into clean, functional areas that still feel fun and inviting. When everything has a home, it’s easier to keep up with daily messes, and kids are more likely to help tidy up—while still having plenty of room to play, create, and enjoy what they love.
To avoid overwhelm in our playroom, I decluttered using this simple system
Declutter in zones- start with one shelf, one corner etc. to avoid overwhelm. ONLY focus on this area through completion.
Keeping what fits in the storage space/containers you have and getting rid of any overflow.
Begin by sorting items into different categories
Your categories can include
Keep out
Keep in toy rotation
Donate
Trash
Belongs in a different room
If you’re like me, you may feel guilty for getting rid of something your kids once loved but no longer touch. Here are some tips to help you make quick decisions without the second guessing.
For each item, ask:
Do they use it weekly? → Keep (Here)
Do they love it but rarely use it? → Rotate/Store
Is it broken/missing parts/annoying? → Trash
Would I buy this again? If no → Donate
Does it belong in another room? → Keep (Elsewhere)
4. Put back with a “one home” rule
Group by type: blocks / dolls / cars / art / books
Each group gets one labeled bin (simple words + pictures are great for little kids)
If the bin is full, something has to leave.
The Maintenance Routine (so it stays decluttered)
Daily (5 minutes)
“5-Minute Basket Sweep”
Set a timer
Toss anything out of place into a laundry basket
Put away only the obvious stuff; basket can be sorted later
Weekly (10 minutes)
“One bin out, one bin in”
Rotate toys: store 1 bin, bring out 1 bin
Keeps interest high and clutter low.
Monthly (15 minutes)
“Quick purge”
Trash broken items
Donate what’s clearly outgrown
Check bins for overflow
